Petitie: gerechtigheid voor het Congolese volk
In de voorbije twee decennia was de bevolking van de Democratische Republiek Congo getuige van verschrikkelijke mensenrechtenschendingen.
Het merendeel van deze schendingen werd niet onderzocht, verantwoordelijken werden niet vervolgd en slachtoffers wachten nog steeds op gerechtigheid en mogelijke schadevergoedingen.
Amnesty vraagt de Congolese overheid om van de strijd tegen straffeloosheid eindelijk een prioriteit te maken. Het rechtssysteem moet hervormd worden met respect voor de internationale standaarden betreffende mensenrechten. Specifieke gerechtelijke en juridische hervormingen inzake schendingen onder het internationaal recht, zoals misdaden tegen de menselijkheid, moeten ondersteund worden en volledig in overeenstemming zijn met de internationale wetgeving.

Gedurende het hele hervormingsproces in Congo is overleg met het maatschappelijk middenveld, in het bijzonder met de slachtoffers en vrouwelijke vertegenwoordigers, onontbeerlijk. Zorg er mee voor dat de Congolezen eindelijk gerechtigheid krijgen: teken de petitie gericht aan de president van Congo.

We appeal to you to make the fight against impunity for past and present crimes and human rights violations a priority for your mandate by reinforcing the reform of the justice system.
We urge you to:
- Foster the implementation of a comprehensive justice sector reform process in the DRC that entrenches the rule of law and respect for international human rights standards, by supporting the initiation of a conference on transitional justice in 2012;
- Support specific judicial and legal reforms that address impunity for crimes under international law, including the re-introduction of legislation establishing a special tribunal of hybrid composition with jurisdiction over genocide, crimes against humanity, and war crimes in full compliance with international human rights and rule of standards;
- Guarantee consultation with civil society and concerned stakeholders, particularly victims and women’s representatives, throughout the process of reforming the criminal justice system of the DRC.
